Launched in July 2021, The Currency is a collection of 10,000 NFTs corresponding to 10,000 original works of art by Damien Hirst. The physical artworks were all handmade and Hirst started making enamel paint in 2016. Each artwork is numbered, titled, stamped and signed by the artist on the back with authenticity marks. No color is repeated twice as Hirst worked on each piece manually, and the title of each artwork was generated through machine learning, embedding some of the artist's favorite lyrics onto the paper.
The Hirst collectors could choose between keeping their NFT or trading it in for the physical artwork. The exchange period ended on July 27, 2022 with a total of 5,149 buyers deciding to keep the physical artwork, and 4,851 the NFT. The physical works for the NFT were burned.
